This local SEO checklist shows what matters for service businesses in the USA and UK. When someone searches for "emergency plumber near me", "dentist in Leeds" or "WordPress developer in Austin", Google decides which few businesses to show. That decision depends on three broad ideas: relevance (do you match the search), distance (are you near the searcher) and prominence (how well known and trusted are you). You cannot control distance, but you can improve the other two.
Use this checklist, starting at the top.
1. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile
This is the most important local asset.
- Choose the most accurate primary category and add relevant secondary ones.
- Fill in services, opening hours, phone, website and a clear description.
- Add real photos of your work, team and premises.
- If you visit customers rather than serve them at a shop, set up a service area instead of showing your home address.
- Post updates and offers now and then.
2. Collect real reviews
Reviews influence both rankings and trust.
- Ask every happy customer, right after the job, with a direct link.
- Reply to every review, good or bad, politely.
- Never buy, fake or trade reviews. It breaks platform rules and can get your profile suspended.
An automated review request through GoHighLevel makes this a habit instead of something you forget.
3. Keep your name, address and phone consistent
Your business name, address and phone number should match everywhere: website, Google profile, social pages and directories. Small differences confuse search engines and customers.
4. Build a website that explains what you do and where
- One clear page for each main service, such as WordPress bug fixing, GoHighLevel setup or Meta Ads management.
- Your location or service area stated clearly, with the town and region in titles and headings where it is natural.
- A visible phone number and an easy form.
- Fast loading on mobile. See our WordPress speed checklist.
5. Create location pages the right way
A page for each area you serve can help, but only if each one earns its place.
- Cover what you do in that area, who you help and any local details that are true.
- Add local examples, questions and common problems.
- Link to the relevant service pages.
- Do not duplicate the same text and swap the place name. Google calls this a doorway-style page and it can drag your site down.
6. Add structured data
LocalBusiness or ProfessionalService schema, plus FAQ markup for real questions, helps search engines understand your pages. Our blog and service pages generate this automatically.
7. List yourself in trusted directories
Use well-known directories that fit your industry and country. In the US that might include Yelp, the Better Business Bureau or trade-specific sites. In the UK, consider Yell, Checkatrade or industry bodies. Quality beats quantity.
8. Earn local links and mentions
Sponsor a local team, partner with complementary businesses, share useful guides and get listed by chambers of commerce or industry bodies. A few good local links are worth more than hundreds of spammy ones.
9. Publish genuinely helpful content
Answer the questions customers ask before they hire you. A page such as how much a business website costs earns trust and brings people who are ready to buy.
10. Track what matters
Watch calls, form submissions and booked jobs, not just rankings. Use Google Search Console, your Business Profile insights and a simple call tracking sheet.
A note on "number one" promises
Nobody can honestly promise first place. Rankings move with competition, location of the searcher and constant algorithm updates. What a good partner does is build clean, fast, helpful pages and a trustworthy profile that give you the best realistic chance, then measure and improve.
